It was the first Thanksgiving on Mars, and the crew of the Artemis mission was determined to make it memorable.
They had brought along a freeze-dried turkey, some instant mashed potatoes, and a can of cranberry sauce. They also had a small hydroponic garden where they grew some herbs and vegetables.
They decided to use some of their precious water supply to rehydrate the food and cook it in a makeshift oven. They even managed to bake some pumpkin pie using a powdered mix and some Martian soil.
The crew gathered around the table, wearing their festive hats and smiling. They said grace and thanked each other for their friendship and support. They also thanked NASA and the people of Earth for making their dream possible.
They cut the turkey and served themselves generous portions. They toasted with their plastic cups filled with Tang™.
They took their first bites and realized that the food tasted terrible. The turkey was dry and bland, the potatoes were lumpy and salty, and the cranberry sauce was metallic and sour. The pie was worse, it had a gritty texture and a bitter aftertaste.
They looked at each other and tried to hide their disappointment. They didn't want to ruin the mood.
But then, one of them started to laugh. He couldn't help it, he found the situation hilarious.
He pointed at his plate and said, "This is the worst meal I've ever had in my life!" The others joined him, laughing until they cried.
They realized that it didn't matter how bad the food was, what mattered was that they were together, on another planet, celebrating a historic occasion. They decided to embrace the absurdity and enjoy the moment.
They made jokes about their food, pretending to gag and spit it out. They threw some pie at each other, starting a food fight. They had fun like they never had before.
They cleaned up the mess and hugged each other. They agreed that it was the best Thanksgiving ever.
