By now, you’ve certainly read the sordid and repulsive details about the latest high-profile serial killer and rapist, Todd Kohlhepp.
I say “the latest” because we all essentially ignore the 24/7 femicide that characterizes “life as we know it.” With that in mind, I’d like to focus on a few Kohlhepp-related factoids I gleaned from the lurid corporate media coverage:
Sadly but tellingly, these five bulleted items could describe tens of millions of males (maybe more in Trump’s America). Sadly but tellingly, these five bulleted items are often shrugged off and filed under: “Boys will be boys.” This is one of many, many reasons why the planet has devolved into a nightmare of relentless male pattern violence.
And let’s be clear: “sexual content” = pornography. Easily accessible, increasingly more extreme pornography. What does a lifetime of consuming easily accessible, increasingly more extreme porn create? More Todd Kohlhepp details, this time from Washington Post:
“Records showed that when Kohlhepp was 15 he went to a neighbor’s house, held a .22-caliber handgun to the 14-year-old girl’s head and demanded that she follow him, the Republic reported. Once back at his home, Kohlhepp duct-taped the girl’s mouth, restrained her hands and raped her -- then told her he would kill her and her younger siblings if she called police, according to the paper.”
If you can, take a scroll through Tumblr porn and see how often you encounter a re-blog of a graphic meme depicting a nude and battered woman with her hands restrained and mouth duct-taped. The words on that ever-popular meme read: “Don’t wrap it and tap it. Tape it and rape it.” For those about to fall back on the old reliable “he’s cherry picking” excuse, I urge you type in the words “Tumblr women duct tape” into Google. You’ll be rewarded with 1,380,000 results in a mere 0.60 seconds.
This is the type of content that “preoccupied” Kohlhepp as it "preoccupies" other men. As it now "preoccupies" boys as young as ten.
The fact that Kala Brown was “chained like a dog” inside a metal storage container on Kohlhepp’s property is being sensationalized and treated like it’s astonishingly abnormal. I have another Google assignment for you: type in “Tumblr women chained like a dog,” if you dare. Without having to click on any of the sadistic links, you’ll learn how “normal” Todd Kohlhepp is. With about 8,820,000 results (in just 0.42 seconds), I suppose it’s just boys being boys again?
Ask yourself: Who makes this type of content so popular? And who models their behavior on it? Is it your boss, your favorite teacher, your mailman… your real estate agent? Your president? When predators like Todd Kohlhepp are treated as aberrations, it’s more challenging to discern who’s really to blame. So, here’s a hint: It ain’t women.
The collective and accepted culture of us males is the problem. And the first giant step to solving this problem is to name it… over and over and over.
