When I was younger…

…if I wanted to play basketball with my friend Frank but my Mom was using the family phone, I’d have to run the risk of getting dressed and walking all the way around the corner with my ball. From there, I’d waste valuable vocal energy to yell up at his window -- only to perhaps find out he wasn’t home or didn’t wanna' play.

I’d bellow: “Frank-AY!” His younger sister would usually hear me first. She’d come to the window and hold up her index finger (the once-universal sign for “one minute”). Next, Frank would appear. I’d use the ball to pantomime a shot and he’d hold up his entire open hand (the once-universal sign for “five minutes”).

In five minutes or maybe more, Frank and I would be walking to the local schoolyard. All that effort just for two unimportant guys to play some unimportant ball. 

Today, the more viral versions of me and Frank would never have to lower ourselves to such primitive and time-wasting tactics. A single text and boom… our epic athletic plans are set in motion and ready to start trending. We’d certainly share our game on Facebook Live and post Insta-stories of each crucial, essential moment. Everything I now do is important

Observation. There is perhaps no more valuable tool in the world of science. Ask Darwin. He did all right for himself observing finches, didn't he? Finches? WTF?

What about art and artists? Just ask Marcel Proust. The writer everyone pretends to read said: "The true voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." (lol)

What I've observed with my very own "new eyes" in the past two decades is an expeditious evolution defying all previous postulations on how quickly a species can mutate, adapt, and evolve. It's obvious from even the most tertiary scrutiny that Homo sapiens have undergone a fair amount of evolution, since 1999 or so. 

I certainly have.

Everything I now do is important. I am more important now than ever before and become more important by the day. Each and every one of us is vastly more important now. But, of course, some will always remain more important than others. (smh)

When I was younger… 

…I’d leave my apartment without a phone in my pocket. 

No call waiting, no answering machines -- just a busy signal or let it ring and ring and ring. Certainly no cell phones, flip phones, Blackberries, pagers, or smartphones. We typically and amazingly were incommunicado for the bulk of every single day -- not nearly important enough to warrant 24/7 tracking of our whereabouts and goings-on. It sucked being so inconsequential. I didn’t realize it at the time but being important has changed my worldview. Thank heaven for evolution.

…I’d eat meals in private.

I’d shop, cook, and eat with ZERO photographic or digital evidence that it ever happened. An incalculable number of eating episodes took place but remained unworthy of public scrutiny and validation. Looking back, I’m shamed by these mundane meals yet grateful that my sudden rise in value now turns even a quick snack into an exhibitionist’s dream. (lmao) #evolved

…my un-evolved thoughts, ideas, emotions, experiences were undeserving of an instantaneous broadcast.

Trust me, it’s no fun to live an uneventful, meaningless life. Your tedious thoughts remain trapped in your dull-witted head. You may get angry on the subway but it’s nothing anyone even remotely wants to hear about. A global event impacts you but you lack the requisite power to exercise your own impact on the planet. Sure, you have some alleged friends IRL but without a sense of importance, you lack FOLLOWERS. (fml)

It’s a burden to carry such magnitude 24/7. So much pressure to endlessly entertain, enlighten, and educate. But, as those of you who dwelled in the pre-evolution days of yore can attest, it’s way more fun knowing that everything I do, every idea I conjure up, every thought that passes through my advanced grey matter is increasingly important, necessary, and must be shared immediately. #ttyl
